  • Graham leads No. 8 Kansas to 104-74 rout of Oklahoma
    on 20th February 2018 at 7:15 am

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Two of the Big 12's most powerful offenses collided when No. 8 Kansas hosted Oklahoma. Only one lived up to the hype, though. Devonte Graham had 23 points and seven assists, Malik Newman added 20 points and No. 8 Kansas beat Oklahoma 104-74 on Monday night in its first true blowout of the Big 12 season. "It was a fun night, a good win," coach Bill Self said. "Certainly we needed a game where we could not sweat until the very, very end." The Jayhawks (22-6, 11-4 Big 12) controlled things early, jumping out to a 10-0 lead less than four minutes into the game and forcing Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger to burn a timeout before the first media break. The Sooners (16-11, 6-9 Big 12) never recovered. "From the start, seemed like we were fighting uphill all night," Kruger said. "Just hanging on to stay within range. Guys fought it pretty good for a while, obviously didn't finish it like we want to or need to." Kameron McGusty led the way for Oklahoma with 22 points... […]

  • Rock band O.A.R. gets popularity bump thanks to Pyeongchang's OAR
    on 20th February 2018 at 5:59 am

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- From the day it was announced, the term was clunky and a mouthful. On the jerseys and jackets at the Winter Games, the label OLYMPIC ATHLETE FROM RUSSIA has looked more like a scarlet letter than a team name. So it makes sense, then, that the title for the 169 Russian athletes competing under the Olympic flag has been simplified to "OAR." Which has had an unexpected effect halfway around the world for the lead singer of the 2000s alternative rock band O.A.R. When O.A.R.'s lead singer Marc Roberge?heard in January that the International Olympic Committee would allow 169 Russian athletes to compete in Pyeongchang under the label "Olympic Athletes from Russia," he knew they would be referred to as OAR. He didn't know there would be something of a popularity resurgence for his band.?? "It's been surreal, absolutely surreal," he said Tuesday from Montana, where he was skiing with his family. "At first I thought it would be a cool coincidence,... […]

  • The All-Star Game gets the LeBron-driven shakeup it needed
    on 20th February 2018 at 1:59 am

LOS ANGELES -- On a night when the NBA wanted to restore a showcase event to its rightful glory, the league's most visible superstar, LeBron James, ignited the team that carried his namesake to a 148-145 win in the most satisfying All-Star Game in years. The NBA and its athletes have become the most ingenious league in the world at generating buzz and stoking narrative conflict, but after the All-Star rosters are named and hands are wrung over snubs and slights, the game in recent years has been stale toast. To heighten the stakes, the NBA injected some more intrigue -- it assigned the task of divvying up the talent to James and Stephen Curry, the leading vote-getters in the All-Star balloting. There was sufficient doubt the novelty of a new format would translate to the court after tip-off. Would LeBron and Steph sincerely be motivated by a desire to prove their mettle as savvy talent evaluators? Would a teammate selected by one of the... […]
